The Detroit Red Wings have made it farther in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs than most analysts and fans thought. Currently, they are heading into Game four's action on Thursday night with the potential to control their own destiny. With a win on Thursday the Wings can grab a three games to one series lead over the Chicago Blackhawks. A lot of the integral pieces that have gotten Detroit

The Blackhawks have enjoyed a storybook season after going 24 straight games without a regulation loss to start the year and a Chicago Tribune columnist wonders if they can overcome the type of adversity they never faced en route to the NHL's regular-season championship.

I consider myself very fortunate as a hockey fan. I have gotten to see many of the all-time greats of the game play in person, including Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Gordie Howe (as a member of the Hartford Whalers in his final NHL season). Watching Pavel Datsyuk's dazzling shot on Detroit's third goal last night, it got me to thinking about which players in the game that it actually feels lik

For 20 seasons, Nicklas Lidstrom demonstrated how to do the job, along the way scooping up seven Norris Trophies as the NHL's best defenseman before retiring last year. He became the standard-bearer of the position, and now he's the example the Wings want young players like Brendan Smith to think of regularly.

Is it too early to panic about the Red Wings? It's never too early for Wings fans to panic. But two CBSSports.com hockey writers, Adam Gretz and Brian Stubits, debated that very subject. (They included the 0-3 Flyers, too, but we don't care about them.)

"When I saw the score, I think it was 9-3 the first time I saw the score, Just looking at all the other series, and how many goals there have been scored, and then you see that series, and I think it's been 23 or 22 goals for both teams. It's been crazy, really, for this type of hockey that you see in the other series."

The Detroit Red Wings are faced with a chilling prospect that has been largely ignored thanks to all the desperate talk coming out of the Motor City.
And, in the long run, a future without all-world defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom has to seem a whole lot scarier to the Wings than a first-round playoff exit.
