Is it too early to panic about the Red Wings? It's never too early for Wings fans to panic. But two CBSSports.com hockey writers, Adam Gretz and Brian Stubits, debated that very subject. (They included the 0-3 Flyers, too, but we don't care about them.)

"It's a different league now. Ten years ago, we felt if the other team's goalie didn't win the series there was a talent disparity where we could get into the second round. That's not the case (now),"

"I think we're probably considered the underdog because they have home ice, and Nashville picked up a lot of real good players at the trade deadline, and then they got Radulov back, so they got deeper, I think the adversity we've went through the last six weeks, with all the injuries, it gave the coaches the chance to look at some players. They know what Gustav Nyquist can do. They know what Brendan Smith can do. So we're deeper today than we were three months ago."

"What I like about this series is, when Game 2 is over Friday night, we'll jump in a plane and land in Detroit at 12:30 Friday night and the guys will be in bed at 1:30. We'll practice here on Saturday and the game's on Sunday, If we're playing a West Coast team, when Game 2 is over, we have to stay there overnight and the off-day is not an off-day, it's a four- or five-hour flight, then bus once we land, and it's supper time before you're home."

It's a hard thing to imagine for die-hard Red Wings fans right now, in the midst of a six-game losing streak, that the Red Wings might actually maintain success in the future. But despite the recent slump, the Red Wings remain one of the better teams in the NHL. Since the early 90's, the Detroit Red Wings have risen from the ashes of the "Dead Wings" to become a powerhouse in the NH

Are the Red Wings going to become the NHL's cradle of general managers? It shouldn't be much of a surprise if they do, because they've always put a premium on having smart players. USA Today's Kevin Allen has identified 16 men who might some day follow Steve Yzerman's path to the GM office, and four of them are former Wings:

"We're giving him a few days off to see how it responds, (Trainer) Piet Van Zant told him to shut it down until we get home on Monday, keep him off ice 3-4 days to do more healing. The doctors really felt a couple of weeks was going to be sufficient enough to get him up and running. But he's not ready. There's no time frame."
